WEST, TX - He worked at the fertilizer plant for 17 years and was a volunteer fire fighter and first responder for 15.
Cody Dragoo, of Laurel, is confirmed to be among those killed in the fertilizer plant explosion on Wednesday.
Dragoo was in the plant when it exploded. He was 50.
The Laurel High School graduate moved from Montana to Texas in 1994 and married his wife Patty Mynar three years later.
Dragoo was the president of the Cottonwood Water Supply Corp for seven years where he made an impact and drew praise from those he worked with.
Among working at the plant, his nephew, John McDonnell, described his uncle as being active in the community, spearheading an annual barbecue competition fundraiser for the volunteer fire department and supported the local tractor pulls.
McDonnell, only six years younger than Dragoo, says it's not only a great loss for the family, but the friends and community in West, Texas.
Dragoo was first on the scene for when the fire broke out at the plant.
"He knew as well as anyone about the dangers of a fire with those chemicals [at the plant], yet he didn't hesitate at the attempt to put it out. That alone is the kind of person he is everyday. A true hero in the definition and in my eyes," said McDonnell.
