BOULDER, CO - The Montana State University Billings' women's cross country team had the best finish of any non-NCAA Div. 1 program running at the Rocky Mountain Shootout Saturday.
The Yellowjacket women finished first out of 11 non-NCAA Div. 1 teams in meet hosted by the University of Colorado. MSUB finished with 50 points, beating out Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference elite programs, Colorado-Mesa and Fort Lewis.
Whitney Mickelsen had the top finish for MSU Billings. The senior came in 18th place overall with a time of 22:24 on the 6K course. She finished second in the non-NCAA Div. 1 field. Mary Owen came in sixth place with a time of 23:38, with Renae Hepfner right behind in eighth finishing at 23:53. Jinise Osborne and Melanie Bock came in 15th and 19th.
"Our women just ran a great race today," MSUB women's and men's cross country head coach David Coppock said. "Our men did very well on this very difficult course as well. With the elevation here it makes things tough for runners. But, our men's team ran very well as a pack. I think both teams ran great, the best we have ever done here definitely. I think we set ourselves up real well for the conference championships."
The Montana State Billings' men finished third as a team in the non-NCAA Div. 1 field. Colorado-Mesa took first with 43 points, Fort Lewis was second with 51 points, and the Yellowjackets were right behind with 54 points.
Clint Choquette led the MSUB men on the 8K course with a time of 26:48. Out of 202 men's runners, Choquette came in 26th. He finished second in the Non-NCAA Div. 1 field. Michael Luhr placed eighth with a time of 27:34. Chase Robinson's 27:34 time was 10th place, and Taylor Canfield and Daniel Lombardi finished in 17th and 20th.
Colorado's Jake Hurysz won the individual title with a time of 24:34. The Colorado men won the Div. 1 team title with 15 points. On the women's side, Colorado's 19 team points took first place. Unattached runner, Ellie Keyser took the individual crown with a time of 20:19.
Before traveling to Monmouth, Ore., for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships, MSU Billings hosts the Yellowjacket Invitational on Oct. 13. The lone home meet of the season begins at 10 a.m.
