MISSOULA- Montana tribes across the state will be able to provide more financial support for their low-income families thanks to a federal grant.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced Wednesday they will distribute $21.2 million to six tribes in Montana, through an Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG).
IHBG funds are designed to benefit low-income families living on Indian reservations or in other communities.
The Blackfeet Housing Authority in Browning is receiving the most money with $6.8 million, followed by the Salish and Kootenai Housing Authority in Pablo with $4.3 million, and the Crow Tribal Housing Authority in Crow Agency with $3 million.
The other tribes receiving these funds are the Chippewa Cree, $2.7 million; Northern Cheyenne $2.7 million; and Fort Belknap Indian Community $1.7 million.
The funds can go toward activities such as housing development, housing services, and crime and prevention and safety.
