BILLINGS - The effort to restore the iconic Northern Hotel in downtown Billings to its former glory days has turned an impressive corner.
Brothers Mike and Chris Nelson purchased the historic hotel in January of 2009 for $2.5 million. For the past several months, crews have been busy removing asbestos and basically taking the hotel down to the bare bones. With that extensive work now complete, the Nelson brothers are now looking forward to moving ahead on re-building the hotel from the ground up.
Essentially, the entire hotel will get a make-over including all 160 rooms, meeting rooms, retail space and two restaurants.
"My hope and my dream is that you know that we're the next step in the revitalization of downtown and the businesses here are a real community and so we can all benefit from the success of the Northern," said Mike Nelson.
Nelson says he and his brother are still hoping to have the hotel's grand opening by the end of next summer.
