MIAMI - The Miami Dolphins discovered Dan Carpenter as an undrafted player out of Montana and helped him become a Pro Bowl kicker in his second NFL season.
Proving the Dolphins value those they discover and develop, Carpenter was recently signed to a three-year extension.
Carpenter, who converted 46-of-53 field goals and 77-of-78 extra-point attempts in his first two NFL seasons, signed the extension days before training camp opens Friday.
According to the NFL Players Association, Carpenter will earn $1 million in base salary in 2011, then $2.53 million in 2012 and $2.68 million in 2013.
Because Carpenter signed a tender offer earlier this summer as an exclusive-rights free agent, he'll earn $470,000 this season.
The NFL's average salary for kickers last season was $868,005.
