HELENA - Jeremy MacGregor, a Helena man charged with two counts of attempted deliberate homicide, appeared before Judge Jeffrey Sherlock on Thursday in District Court.
MacGregor allegedly shot his wife and nanny on April 15, 2010.
MacGregor has now refused his right to a public defender and will be representing himself.
During the omnibus hearing on Thursday, MacGregor complained that the Lewis & Clark County jail hadn't provided him with necessary research materials to represent himself. He also told Judge Sherlock that he hadn't been provided with the motions filed by the county prosecutor's office.
Judge Sherlock gave MacGregor his own personal copy of court rules and regulations.
The Judge gave MacGregor a few extra days to file the necessary motions, because MacGregor neglected to do so by today's hearing date. The hearing will continue on Monday.
(May 27, 2010) Jeremy MacGregor, the Helena man accused of shooting his wife and nanny, appeared in court on Thursday to plead not guilty. MacGregor, 31, is charged with two accounts of attempted deliberate homicide. If convicted, he faces 10 to 200 years in prison.
On April 15th, following a domestic disturbance, MacGregor allegedly shot his wife Jennifer in the chest; he also allegedly shot his 63-year old nanny Betsy Mart multiple times.
He is being held in Lewis & Clark County jail on a $100,000 bond.
(April 16, 2010) Court documents released on Friday charge that Jeremy MacGregor shot both his wife and his children's nanny following a loud verbal argument.
MacGregor appeared in a Helena courtroom on Friday charged with two counts of attempted deliberate homicide. During his appearance, he claimed that he acted in self-defense, but authorities say there is no evidence of that. MacGregor's bond was set at $100,000.
According to the affidavit, on April 15 at 10:24 p.m., a female identified as "B.M." called 911 from a house at 1107 11th Avenue to report a loud argument between Jeremy MacGregor, 31, and his wife, identified as 25-year old "J.M."
B.M. stated that she was the nanny of the MacGregor's children.
Helena police officers responded to the residence and were told that during the argument, MacGregor tripped and fell, breaking a wine glass and cutting his hand. MacGregor, his wife, and B.M. asserted that they were all comfortable remaining in the house together, and so the officers left the home.
Just 30 minutes later, J.M. called 911 and said that she was at the corner of 11th Avenue and North Montana Avenue and that she had been shot by MacGregor at their home.
Police went back to the house and in the basement discovered the nanny, B.M., laying on the floor with multiple gunshots; she was conscious and stated that MacGregor had shot her. Officers observed a revolver on the floor in the basement.
Both J.M. and B.M. were transported to St. Peter's Hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries.
J.M. was interviewed by police officers at St. Peter's and she said that after the police left her home the first time, she attempted to put her husband to bed, and that while she was in the bedroom, MacGregor pulled a gun and tried to hold it to her head; she pushed the gun away and ran to the front door; she turned around out of concern for her children, at which point MacGregor shot her in the chest. She then fled the house and called 911.
B.M. was interviewed at the hospital and stated that after the officers left the home after the first incident, she went to the basement and then heard gunshots from upstairs. She said that MacGregor then came down the stairs and shot her multiple times.
After being arrested, MacGregor expressed remorse for shooting the women, who he believed he had killed.
