BILLINGS - A Billings man on trial this week for killing his friend nearly two years ago, has changed his plea.

Jeffrey Guy, 44, was claiming self defense in the murder of Scott Maxson, 44, but early Thursday afternoon he pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of mitigated deliberate homicide.

Guy also pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with evidence.

The plea agreement calls for a sentence of 50 years in prison.

Guy was initially facing a deliberate homicide charge that could have resulted in a 100 year prison sentence.

The trial was in its third day when Guy changed his plea.

Guy was released to the custody of his mother until 5 p.m. Thursday.

Guy's sentencing is scheduled for April 15.
