Can graphic warning labels on cigarettes get people to stop smoking? The FDA is betting they can. Its new labels - which include no-holds-barred images of smoking-related illness - are scheduled to debut in September 2012. And now Health Canada is getting into the act, unveiling new labels that may be even more graphic. One heartbreaking image shows Barb Tarbox, a Canadian woman who died from smoking-related lung cancer, on her death bed. "We're hoping her image will have an impact on a lot of youth and that's really what Barb wanted to do," her husband, Pat, told the Vancouver Sun.

Some Canadian tobacco companies have cried foul, telling Reuters the new labels are "poor policy for political gain," and that they're unlikely to work.
