MISSOULA - A consulting firm hired by the University of Montana concludes it would have cost the school millions to move up a division and join the Western Athletic Conference.
The university decided in November not to accept an invitation to join the WAC and leave the Big Sky Conference.
Now the Missoulian reports that a 221-page study compiled last summer by NACDA Consulting shows the move would have been pricey.
The study found the school's athletic budget would have to increase to $22.9 million in the next five years compared to $16.1 million now.
The costs would have come in the form of additional coaches, more scholarships and new women's sports.
Recommended facility upgrades could have run tens of millions of dollars more.
