MISSOULA - Late Wednesday afternoon the University of Montana alerted media outlets to a news conference set for Thursday morning on campus.
"The Griz Athletic Department will be holding a press conference tomorrow (Thursday, August 26) at 10 a.m.," the one-sentence release stated.
Sources close to the school say the media conference may center on an extension for interim football coach Mick Delaney, and an update on UM's Athletic Director search. When Delaney first took over he said he was only interested in leading the Griz for a year, but may have since changed his mind to help stabilize Montana's football program.
UM has also been awaiting the findings of an NCAA investigation since January. The NCAA has not revealed what led its investigators to the school, but said such investigations typically take about six months.
One UM student-athlete, running back Beau Donaldson, faces a criminal charge of sexual intercourse without consent. The Missoula County Attorney's office is still deciding whether to pursue charges against quarterback Jordan Johnson who has been accused of rape by a Missoula woman. And earlier this summer, interim football coach Mick Delaney dismissed quarterback Gerald Kemp from the team for unspecified team rule violations.
Kemp and Johnson still appear on UM's football roster.
