George McGovern gravely ill

Former Democratic presidential candidate George McGovern was on life support and "no longer responsive" on Wednesday, two days after he was admitted to a hospice, his family said.

The 90-year-old former U.S. senator from South Dakota suffers from a variety of ailments "that have worsened over recent months" due to age, the McGovern family said in a statement issued Wednesday afternoon.

McGovern is best known for his unsuccessful 1972 run to unseat Richard Nixon on a platform that included ending the war in Vietnam. He lost 49 of the 50 states to the Republican incumbent, who was forced to resign in the Watergate scandal less than two years later.

McGovern won a seat in the House of Representatives in 1956 and was elected to the Senate in 1962. He returned to the Senate after his presidential campaign, but lost the seat in the Republican wave that accompanied Ronald Reagan's election to the White House in 1980.
