CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) The federal government has decided not to protect the Wyoming pocket gopher under the Endangered Species Act.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says in documents released Wednesday that oil and gas development, wind energy development and climate change are likely to affect the Wyoming pocket gopher. But the agency says it's unclear whether those will harm the animal.
The Wyoming pocket gopher is a small, burrowing rodent that carries food in pouches next to its mouth. There are several pocket gopher species but the Wyoming pocket gopher exists in small numbers in a relatively small area.
The Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and Center for Native Ecosystems petitioned to protect the Wyoming pocket gopher in 2007.
