Fatal shooting, Lewis and Clark County deputies involved

HELENA - UPDATE: One person is dead after a shooting involving a Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's Deputy on Sunday evening in Helena.

The News Station's Melissa Anderson is on the scene where she reports seeing one car riddled with bullet holes. She also says five Lewis & Clark County Sheriff's vehicles are all quarantined off.

Law enforcement officials report that the deceased suspect is still inside the vehicle. The identity of the person has not yet been released.

The incident occurred in front of one of the branches of the Helena Community Credit Union; the corner of North Montana Avenue and Buffalo Road has been taped off while authorities continue their investigation.

Sheriff Leo Dutton said that three Sheriff's Deputies were involved in the shootout; all three have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

The MT Department of Criminal Investigation was called in by the Sheriff to conduct an investigation in order to ensure that proper action was taken during the incident.

The shooting occurred around 11:35 pm on Sunday when officers pursued the suspect in the Treasure State Acres subdivision.

The short chase led to a stop by officers in front of the Helena Community Credit Union, where the shooting occurred.

The Sheriff says one other person of interest is being sought at this time, but states that there is no danger to community.

Lewis & Clark County Coroner Mickey Nelson and County Attorney Leo Gallagher will conduct a coroner's inquest; no date has yet been set.

The Sheriff said that he will have more information later this afternoon.

Law enforcement reports the deceased suspect is still inside the vehicle.

She says law enforcement has the corner of North Montana Avenue and Buffalo Road taped off for investigation. The incident occurred in front of one of the branches of the Helena Community Credit Union.

The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation is investigating the scene. One of its investigators reports a helicopter is flying overhead to take photos of the scene.

Sheriff Leo Dutton is holding a press conference this morning. We will bring you more details as they become available.
