Details emerge in Whitefish Amber Alert arrest

KALISPELL - More details are emerging in the arrest of a Canadian man in Whitefish who was the subject of an Amber Alert issued Thursday.

The Flathead County Sheriff's Office reports that Robert Barnett, was arrested in his vehicle in Whitefish at around 6:45 a.m. on Friday.

Robert allegedly abducted his three-year-old son during a supervised visitation in Fernie, B.C. on Thursday.

Authorities say Robert crossed into the United States near Eureka on Thursday. Dave Leib with the Sheriff's Office says Robert approached a man at a bowling alley in Whitefish to ask for money and to use of the man's cell phone on Thursday.

The man agreed to buy Robert breakfast in the morning, and told Robert he could sleep in his car outside the man's house, according to a news release.

Leib says the man realized that Robert the subject of an Amber Alert on Friday and called 911.

Robert was arrested without incident by officers from the Whitefish Police Department and the Flathead County Sheriff's Office, according to Leib.

The three-year-old child was found safe and is now in the custody of the Department of Family Services in Kalispell.
