CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) Environmentalists and Wyoming's gas industry are awaiting word whether the Wyoming pocket gopher will be federally protected.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to announce soon whether it will protect the gopher under the Endangered Species Act.
The Laramie-based group Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and Denver-based Center for Native Ecosystems petitioned to list the Wyoming pocket gopher as endangered in 2007. A subsequent lawsuit settlement established a Saturday deadline for Fish and Wildlife to submit its finding.
The Wyoming pocket gopher is a palm-sized, burrowing rodent that carries food inside fur-lined pouches in its cheeks. It's one of several pocket gophers in the West but is believed to be the only mammal species that exists only in Wyoming.
