UPDATE 10:38 p.m.
Q2 received an email from a Charter Communications representative stating the Internet problems originated in Billings.
"At about 4 p.m., Charter Communications personnel detected an interruption in Internet services impacting an undetermined number of customers in some areas of Montana, Wyoming and Colorado.
Engineers traced the issue to an equipment problem in a Billings, Montana, data center.
The problem was corrected and services restored at 8:16 p.m."
BILLINGS - A problem at Charter Communications late Wednesday resulted in widespread Internet and phone outages across Montana and extending all the way to the West Coast.
A map of the outages showed widespread problems with connections.
The outage affected many restaurants and retail outlets where credit and debit card machines were also out of service.
Customer service lines at Charter were overwhelmed with many callers getting disconnected.
