RED LODGE, MT - Dog might be man's best friend, but he's also a fierce competitor against his fellow canine. On Sunday, about 30 pooches went head to head, trying to pull their way to victory.
Lindsey Cadwell, who organized the event said every year it "always seems like the smaller dogs come in first. They're faster and stronger and surprisingly they win it every year."
Dogs of all shapes and sizes came out to the fifth annual Monster Dog Pull to show their stuff and of course get a treat. The dogs that competed in the monster dog pull actually ranged in weight from five pounds to 134 pounds. Depending on their weight, they pulled one of these weighted sleds, or attempted to across the finish line.
While some dogs listened to their masters every command, others, tried with every inch of their might.
"It was great, poor Tooky didn't know what to do though. He's never been on a leash, but he did pretty good,"said owner Dionne Adams about the event.
Even seasoned pooches, like 12-year-old Emmie, a Yorkie, had some trouble with this year's course.
"I've trained her for about the last five months or so and she might be a little overweight this morning. Other than that we're proud of her. She had a little bad start," said owner Jim Bujold.
Although some dogs had trouble pulling their weight, others had no trouble keeping their eyes on the prize. And proud owners say, no matter how well their dog did, the event was all about having fun.
"He loves it. If he could do this every weekend he would be out here doing it. He just loves the camaraderie with the people and the other dogs and he just thinks it's a lot of fun. It's all for the dogs," said owner Sunny Lewis.
The overall fastest dog at the competition was Porter, a wolf-siberian-husky mix, who competed in the 81 - 100 lbs. division. Porter crossed the finish line in 3.25 seconds
