BILLINGS- Today, millions of Christians worldwide celebrated the beginning of the season of Lent.

People in Billings gathered at their places of worship to commemorate the beginning of Lent by attending Ash Wednesday church services.

Several Christian denominations mark their members with ashes, a symbol used to signify a time of refinement and renewal.

During Lent, several Christian denominations encourage members to give up a distraction to their daily life or add on a task in order to better themselves and improve their spiritual life.

Adult Catholics were also asked to fast on Ash Wednesday and abstain from meat.

At St. Patrick's Co-Cathedral, local Catholics gathered to celebrate mass at noon, which also included receiving ashes.
