BILLINGS - The man accused of killing a St. Xavier man this past weekend appeared in federal court on Tuesday.
John Harold Holds III, 40, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Carolyn Ostby on one charge of murder.
Holds is accused of killing Franklin Red Wolf, 42, whose body was found Saturday south of Hardin near the Two Leggins river access.
Big Horn County Coroner Terry Bullis said Red Wolf died of numerous stab wounds.
Bullis said he is unsure of the exact time Red Wolf died, but it was sometime between midnight and noon on Saturday.
Court records were sealed by Judge Ostby. Attorneys said the affidavit contains information that is sensitive to the ongoing investigation.
Holds waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Tuesday. He is currently being held at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility. A detention hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
During his court appearance, a public defender said Holds was being supported by his girlfriend. His last steady job was in 2007 at a nursing home in Crow Agency.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, FBI, and the Big Horn County Sheriff's Office are in charge of the investigation.
