Best teachers in Billings honored at annual appreciation banquet

BILLINGS - The best teachers received special honors at the annual Billings Education Association Appreciation Awards Banquet, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Thursday night.
Crystal Knutson, a counselor at Eagle Cliffs Elementary School, received the BEA Teacher of the Year Award.
The BEA chose Anne Cole for it's Friends of Education Award.
The banquet may be best known for the Golden Apple Awards, given to six teachers:
- Kathleen Anderson, Big Sky Elementary, elementary teacher award
- Michelle Andrikopoulos, Highland Elementary, elementary teacher award
- Peggy Reynolds, Bench Elementary, support professional award
- Lisa Lopez, Boulder Elementary, specialist award
- Tammy Grimm, Lewis & Clark Middle School, middle school teacher award
- Glenda McCarthy,Senior High School, high school teacher award
Golden Apple committee chair Mary Jo Fox says the award goes to teachers, .who have been exemplary in inspiring students.
"Maybe they realize they have skills they didn't know they had," Fox said. "And to really turn on that light bulb, that hey I'm really good at something and I'm going to excel at this and anyone who can inspire a child to pick up a book whetjer it's on an e-reader or in a text book or to go further than they thought they could, that's an exemplary teacher in my book."
The banquet also honored 51 teachers retiring at the end of the school year.
