Athletes celebrate with Special Olympics opening ceremony

Montana Special Olympics athletes, families, friends and supporters packed the Rimrock Auto Arena in Billings on Wednesday as the state summer games got underway.

Law enforcement officials helped lead the torch portion of the opening ceremony and Governor Brian Schweitzer spoke to the athletes and families.

Special Olympics Athlete of the Year Buzz Tolliver joined Billings Mayor Tom Hanel in lighting the torch to officially kick off the event.

More than 1,000 athletes are participating in this week's games.

Competition began on Thursday morning at Rocky Mountain College and will continue on Friday.
