Angela's Adventures: Chico Hot Springs

CHICO HOT SPRINGS - The natural, hot springs pools at Chico, about 35 miles south of Livingston, have been attracting soakers and swimmers for more than a century.

"We're 100 years old and in Montana, 100 years old is old!" exclaimed Chico Hot Springs Human Resources Director Ruthann Young.

The hot springs at Chico flow into two mineral pools. The water is super-heated by molten rock far beneath the earth's surface.

The resort can't dictate the natural temperature of the water flowing in, but they do off-set the heat by adding cold water. The end result? A hot-pool perfect for all ages.

"It's been great, we've just really enjoyed the atmosphere and the water's fantastic," said Helena residents John and Heather Monday. "It's very relaxing and lots of stuff to do."

Fellow soaker, Dave Herman agreed.

"Montana isn't known for all it's swimming holes," said area resident, Herman. "But this is a great one. The water's awesome and it's perfect for the kids; it's perfect for us."

Although most outdoor pools close for the winter season in Montana, this one is open year round.

"In the summertime you'll see people lounging outside the pool a little more and in the winter time they're soaking and warming up," explained Young. "They're doing something that not skiing or snow sports."

And for reassurance on those frigid, snowy days take it from a local.

"During the winter it's spectacular," Herman stated.

Whether it's a pit-stop during your summer vacation or a wintry weekend getaway, the naturally filled pools at Chico Hot Springs create a year-round adventure for both locals and tourists.
