BILLINGS - When you think bikers, you assume tough and rugged members. And Roaddogs are tough, especially this time of year when it comes to the annual Toy Run.
"We ride if there is a foot of snow out. We don't care if it's 12 below, we're on our bikes this time of year," said longtime participant Goofy Zeiler.
For the past 28 years, more than 500 bikers of the Road Dogs partner with the Salvation Army.
This year, they purchased more than $22,000 worth of toys for the less fortunate.
That translates into 500 families experiencing Christmas on December 25, 500 families with toys for their kids, 500 families who get to enjoy this holiday season.
Santa made was also with the group to assist in donations.
He joked this toy run made it easier on his hardworking elves, but he praised Billings for their efforts each year.
"The whole community, it's a community wide effort. All the motorcycle riders and their families chip in. And make this a great success."
The community wide effort filled Rimrock Mall with a mountain of toys.
And the toys help the families who receive them, those who receive tend to give back in future toy runs.
"They're right back in it if things have improved for them. They come out the next year, they help out. That's what it's all about, paying it forward. We're not getting any younger. And you see a lot of children here who are helping. It's instilling in the children that it's not always about receiving, it's also about giving."
Linda Jackson, Director of Salvation Army of Yellowstone County, said this partnership is a cornerstone to each holiday season for their program and the families they serve.
"Most families are just very grateful for everything the Road Dogs and the Salvation Army do. And we're just very privileged to serve like this."
If you or someone you know is in need of holiday assistance, the Salvation Army of Billings extended the deadline for Christmas assistance applications to Wednesday the 12th.
Applications can be found at the Salvation Army office at 2100 6th Avenue North.
