College football will finally have a playoff. Come 2014 the BCS is dead.
Conference presidents late Tuesday afternoon approved a four-team playoff to begin in January of 2014. A proposal had been on the table for a couple of months.
Last January's national championship debacle between LSU and Alabama was so ugly that even college football's most prominent figures were forced to consider a playoff. No. 2 Alabama won 21-0 in a game that consisted of five field goals, two missed field goals, a blocked field goal and a garbage touchdown, capped by a PAT that bounced off the upright. The nation's supposed number one team, LSU, didn't score a point and only crossed midfield once. That left fans wondering what high-ranked teams like Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma State or Boise State could have done in a championship atmosphere.
A high ranking BCS official told the Sporting News immedately following the game that a playoff was likely on the way.
